(Rant) Criticisms of goth community, based on personal experiences

CW/TW: last paragraph touches on antisemitism and extreme right wing people, second last is about animal abuse.

I'm starting my 11th year in this subculture. English is not my first language. This post starts with unimportant pet peeves and ends on basically a hate crime :,)

This is a bit different to my usual tips posts. I was never too keen on dance parties in clubs, I mostly attended festivals or live shows when it comes to goth events. In September 2022 I wanted to change that. I'm in Lower Silesia / Southwestern Poland and most of these particular adventures happened in Wrocław or in the Lower Silesian voivodeship, but some of these things apply to the wider goth community I feel like.

First of all, this might piss people off, but of we look up a definition of a poser - most goths are posers. They don't pose as goths - that seems to be the no. 1 crime in this subculture, but I don't mean it in that way - they pose as these intellectual academics, "I'm smarter than you" people. (It's not like I'm not guilty of that myself, but I'm trying my best to not be a megalomaniac lol) To add some context, I work in a museum that is ran by one of Poland's biggest archival institutes - my specialty is culture and fashion of the Polish Sarmatian Nobility, but I also work with let's just say history of literature and culture in 19th century Poland. And holy shit for some reason goths LOVE to flex knowledge they just don't have - the Victorian era often being the main focus. The easiest example is Black Friday's "Historical Black & Red Fashion from Punk Rave" video, in which she says that massive puffy sleeves were a popular fashion choice in the "begginning of the Victorian Era, the early 1800s". The era started in 1837 and yes, you'd find some puffy sleeves in 1830s-40s, but the puff starts lower on the arm, not at the shoulder - Black Friday was complaining about the puffs on the shoulders and how they could potentially not fit her figure. She's referring to the 1890s dresses. Her mistake is just an example, she's not a historian and I generally like her, not trying to be mean here. She's just a massive public figure, and referring to some people with no internet presences who I've met at some point would make a shit example.

Other thing about posing is this whole "we're the aristocracy of the night" - no hun, you're a hoe for capitalism, wearing a polyester vampire dress from Party City Punk Rave, drinking goth club vodka and happily listening to insanely pretentious, fast food for the brain kinda songs, like "We're the Children of the Dark" (if you don't know that song, good, you're blessed). Obviously not all goths are like this, but my local community is packed with these folks. Before someone accuses me of anything related to finances when it comes to clothes - thrifting a silk, linen or wool in Poland requires literally $5 on the most expensive thrift store day, $1,50 on the cheapest. Punk Rave is so much more expensive than thrifting organic, very high end clothing. You know why people still buy these plastic garments? It's tacky, and they love it. The pseudo-brocade fabric with pseudo-baroque ornaments, neon purple prints slapped on a synthetic satin black dresses, it's just horrible, but it sells for some awful reason. (For context - I'm a design student, currently doing a master's degree, so at least I'd like to think this whole argument is not only based on my personal taste.) I'm not saying you can't enjoy these things, but enjoy them for what they are - and they're everything but high quality, aristocrat worthy pieces.

Now we're moving onto music yay! So, seems like every goth I meet is a metalhead who listens to one post punk song per 100 metal songs. And I'm not talking about babybats here! Not about casuals either, but about people who claim to be elders with massive knowledge. I've met a guy once (sadly) who claimed to be an elder goth at the very young age of 29. Sure. Did he have knowledge? Lol obviously he didn't. Not about goth music, but he was crazy about screamo. Nothing against screamo, but it's kinda *cough* cringe *cough* to claim yourself as a trad elder while you're not even 30 and don't really listen to goth stuff. Also he defended racist bands, so that's fun.

Another thing that I mentioned is the popularity of fast food songs as I call them. I'm not fully against that kind of music, but it bothers me when people only listen to that and act like it's peak music taste. Examples (please don't get upset if you like these artists or songs, I'm just some person on the internet after all) are, again, Children of the dark by Mono Inc ft. Chris Harms, Joachim Witt and Tilo Wolff, whatever tf Lacrimosa is doing these days, Lord of the Lost, Die Kreatur, Deathstars. But "Children..." is the worst offender, with such subtle, not at all middle school lyrics like:

"We're nothing like you A wall in black We're nothing like you And you don't get who we are, who we are"

or

"We're nothing like you, we're true and free We're nothing like you but you can't see We're nothing like you and all the rest We're nothing like you We're the children of the dark"

LIKE ARE WE ALL 12 YEARS OLD. TELL ME. This is so cringe in the worst way possible. It's so bad. How does this pass as something of value? My local community just adores this trash. And like what happened to Tilo's music? It used to be good, and now it's this edgelord shadow the hedgehog shit. Tbh I do history classes for 12 y.o. kids and they'd laugh at this. I can understand that this might be someone's guilty pleasure, but something you brag about? Even if you genuinely like songs like these (if they make you happy, don't stop listening to them! I might find it cringe, but like idk people may be drawn to these for a variety of reasons), I feel like it's important to anyone, goth or not, to consume high quality music from time to time, even to just learn about music in general.

Another thing is lack of originality. Goths often are like "normies all look the same haha". Honey goths look like clones. Don't come at me with these "there are victorian, trad and hippie and many other types of goths" argument, because it only means that people choose from 20 established looks. Trad goths look extremely similar to each other. Same with "victorian" goths. Same with hippie goths, romantic goths, vampire goths, whatever. I stopped wearing distinctly gothic outfits some time ago. I still dress in all black everyday, but the style of pieces is more, uhh, just 60s mod inspired? Or very formal. Just personal taste, it kinda happened by accident.

TW animal abuse

Last crime is a more significant one, very present in my local community, as well as uh, everywhere really - bigotry, ignorance, racism, sexism, lack of maturity. I have two very clear examples taken from my personal life. The first one happened on the last Castle Party - a dude had a pet owl and was smoking cigs, while the bird was on his shoulder, inhaling the smoke. Some girls tried to act up, but the dude refused to listen. One of them posted a photo of him with the owl to a facebook group, and the responses were mixed. Most women in the comments were rightfully infuriated, but most men (the whole comment section was weirdly divided by genders) only typed "poka sowe" (pol. show owl), a reference to a very stupid Polish meme rap songs about, well, pp. Because why care about animal abuse when you can be silly and goofy!

TW antisemitism

Another example is from Castle Party 2019, me and my friend had a very funky tent from the 80s, it looked like a small circus, but was difficult to put up. Some men in their 40s asked (very politely) if we need help, so we said yes and thanked them. They helped us with the tent... while shouting antisemitic slurs and statements such as "this party isn't for the lefties". The friend I was with is Jewish (she doesn't look Jewish tho, so they probably had no idea), so that was just. Yea. Sorry about this being so negative, but all of these experiences made me almost leave the subculture. At the end of the day, I'm a bit too attached to many parts of it, but the local community is not one of them. I'd rather just listen to my CDs by myself at this point.

Honestly people who demonize Eddie for like...selling weed but also ketamine one time to teens always rubs me the wrong way. It never reads as a good faith or remotely progressive take to me. Like this man lives in a thin-walled one bedroom trailer with his uncle and keeps getting held back in school which would make getting an honest job difficult. He doesn't even sell the hard stuff! If it was coke I would understand it a bit better but it's literally just pot the vast majority of the time like he was visibly concerned when Chrissy asked for "something stronger". Makes me wonder if they think irl weed guys who sell to their own classmates or neighbors like this are the devil and not just poor people trying to get by

Exactly. I could ramble on and on as to how he doesn't sell hard drugs, he doesn't even seem to sell the stronger-than-weed stuff regularly because else he would have known where he has it, he never even asked Chrissy whether she wanted something stronger or tried to even talk her into any kind of deal but offered to walk away when he noticed she was jumpy and thought she'd gotten cold feet.

The boy lives, as you said, in a one bedroom trailer with his uncle, we see mold in a huge corner of his bedroom ceiling. He doesn't have a lunch like the rest of Hellfire, and the way we see Eddie munching through a whole damn grocery store when at the boathouse leaves no doubt that he didn't miss lunch because he wasn't hungry. It's obvious he's poor. He's not some full-time drug dealer, he's a senior in high school who sells weed to other seniors and the occasional stronger pill if asked for it so he'd have enough money to finance the things he's actually passionate about like music and D&D and his metal aesthetic. Speaking of which - in rural Hawkins of the 80s, which chance does he stand as a metalhead to actually get a side job? Do people truly think Scoop's would have let him sell ice cream? That Keith would have given him a job at Family Video? Or some restaurant or diner would have employed him as a waiter? Do they think Eddie would have ever asked Wayne for money even if there had been any left at the end of the month?

The scene of Eddie telling Robin and Steve "I swore to myself I wouldn't wind up like he did" when telling how his dad taught him to hotwire cars is proof enough that Eddie doesn't want to leave the right path and that he won't. He's doing his best with the cards he's been dealt. On that note: he knows how to hotwire cars. Yet he decided it's still better to sell weed and the occasional pill or Special K to make money instead.

And he's 20 - he could have given up on graduation after the first attempt. He didn't. It was evident in the series that he wanted to graduate, to keep door open for honest jobs to live by which would have been closed without a diploma.

The writers have gone out of their way to make clear Eddie isn't some evil guy selling heroin like some master of puppets, feeding off the souls of the damned. Again, yeah it's a flaw to sell drugs, even the soft(er) ones, but the way Eddie treats others, sacrificed himself for a town that hated him, showed self-awareness of his shortcomings and tried to be better should be proof enough that Eddie is a good person who wouldn't harm others in any way.

again, animal handling was one of those skills i expected a muse to just be born with, but the fact that leigh actively nurtured this skill to combat her lack of human connection ? owie. i also love how a part of her tragic backstory bleeds into her need to find sam, to give him a voice, even if she’s not exactly noble herself. 

emmet ericson as THE CLEAN SLATE 

every time i read emmet’s application, it haunts me more and more, especially the line “she’s got to prove to someone, anyone, herself, that people are worth looking for.” i can’t wait for her to break my damn heart over and over and over again. 

saaleha davis as THE EBULLIENT 

just the fact that she was too much of a team player to excel in gymnastics is just... a fucking god tier interpretation of the ebullient skeleton. saaleha won my heart over easily, as she does with so many others, i’m sure, and i can’t wait to make her suffer see her thrive !!

cyrus is a fucking incredible mixture of both brashness and low self-esteem, and by the time he was being shuffled off to wormwood in shame, i was absolutely in love with him. at least to me, he’s too much heart and too much loneliness, and i can’t wait to see how he develops. 

nigel giocondo-jones as THE GRIFTER 

if you were to peek at my notes for this app, the first thing you’d notice are the words “THIS FUCKS”, underlined three times. nigel’s story had me reeling from the very beginning, and he is every bit as broken and devious as i could wish for him to be.

you had me at “loan sharks”. no but seriously, cain’s lifelong struggles and distrust of the justice system ( his shitty father being the chief of police ?? fucking oof ) makes him the perfect hellion. also the fact he was a loan shark’s foot soldier, that’s just... zoinks, is all i can say. 

ava moore as THE INSIDER 

ava’s app left me out of breath just reading it, but honestly, that’s the kind of energy i want from the insider. she comes across so airy and light, and the visual of her rollerskating away from a tough conversation while popping a lollipop in her mouth is truly the most insider thing i could think of. 

natty darnell as THE LOVELACE

not only is natty kind of silly and just a little bit dramatic, she has some hidden depths to her that make her so much more intriguing. that fear of impermanence, the need to romanticize, and her almost cartoonish nature tie together so perfectly. i can’t wait to welcome her to wormwood! 

joshua min as THE METALHEAD

josh embodies both the single-minded focus and the overwhelming practicality of the metalhead so fucking well. even just how he ended up going to wormwood is perfect. also, don’t worry; i’ll be adding an auto shop for josh shortly. 

juno goulart as THE MISANTHROPE

juno captures the general alienation of the misanthrope skeleton so fucking well. everything from her penchant for numbers, to her distaste for rules and authority of all sorts. i also love how you went full kierkegaard and managed to weave questioning religion in with all the themes that make her up. 

daniel molina as THE RHYTHM 

empathy is one of those special skills i expected an applicant to say their muse was more or less born with, but the fact that daniel had to actually learn it after falling from such great heights is pretty incredible. i’m gonna love watching him grow. 

adrianna deveaux as THE SABOTEUR

this one was, by far, the toughest decision i had to make, but in the end, adrianna just fit the skeleton so fucking perfectly. she pursued finance out of spite, she went to wormwood because she didn’t want to be just another number in the ivies, and the fact she heard about sam going missing and thought “finally, something fun” ??? she’s the worst, and i love her.

TMA S1

-the archive is a super funky place that studies all sorts of weird shit. important characters from it include head archivist jon sims, his merry band of helpers martin, sasha and tim, and sexy boss elias.

-gertrude robinson was jon's predecesor, the last head archivist. apparently she was a bit disorganized, but maybe she was just Fun. elias says she disappeared but found a lot of blood on her office, so they considered her dead. turns out martin found her in the tunnels during the prentiss attack, dead from gunshots, sitting in a little room full of tapes. also interesting: in the burnt remains episode, that ritual place had her photograph inside all the bottles. the guy from ep 11 dreamer wrote to gertrude, telling her she was in danger. in the growing dark episode they mention she had been near the weird church place before she died. or smth.

-another important (?) character is michael saland fingers. he appears normal but is kinda like that salad fingers dude, and probably speaks like a wavy meme from all the distortion. i think he did something to sasha, cause she was acting weird, but i'm not sure.

-there's the whole jurgen leitner thing, a norwegian dude who had a big collection of creepy books. his books appear in ep 4, with the guy who was friends with mike crew (lightning boy), then in 17 with the boneturner's tale, where we learn about some jared hopworth or smth dude, who's got funny bones. i think he had something to do with the schwartzwald episode, with the tomb and the books found there? and also in the old passages episode.

-speaking of leitner, there are two characters connected to him: mary and gerard key (i still don't know how you spell that). mary had a shaved head and her skin was all tattooed, she appeared in ep4 but was actually dead i think, so i'm not sure about her. then we have gerard, her son, who's like a metalhead looking kinda dude, and he's always trying to...burn? get rid of? the leitner books? in ep 12, first aid, he is at a hospital being treated because of his burns, and has a bunch of tattoos of eyes on his body.

-peter lukas is also a character. i don't know why he's important, but fandom tells me he's elias' husband divorced for the 5th time, so he must be. he's a seacaptain, has or worls for a company called solace shipping, and may be connected to the lukas family from ep 13, alone, the creepy ones from the funeral. also, the lukases finance the magnus institute.

-also there's a jonah magnus, the dude from schwartzwald wrote to him once. that's all i have for now.

-melanie is a tv person, and there's a georgie who's a youtuber. idk, man.

-random connections from random episodes!: the coffin from ep 2 do not open was delivered by the same company that delivered the yellow stole to the priest in 19/20

-they delivered the table from ep 3, the one the neighbor had, to the institute, and sasha found it...

-the cult from ep 9 a father's love is kinda related to the one from ep 25 growing dark? maybe?

-the archives that were stolen after the prentiss attack where the ones from strange music (weird piano and dolls), and the one from michael (a distortion). how that connects, i have no idea.

All forms of language need some kind of rule system in order to be effective, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to communicate with others at all. Even the dialects that people deride for not being “proper” have grammatical rules -- as becomes painfully obvious when non-Black people try to use AAVE lmao. As far as capitalisation is concerned, I use the proper forms of it on surveys (I don’t know why, I just always have) but an “improper”, casual form almost everywhere else on the internet. My familiarity and ease with the English language is pretty well demonstrated by all the different forms of it I switch between on a regular basis, and I enjoy playing with and learning the variations of language like this.

Are you good at wrapping gifts for others? >> Yeah, I can wrap a gift pretty well.

Even when it comes to calling people “stupid” and “disgusting” for their opinions or their lifestyles. I am far from being a particularly kind person, but every day I try my best to evaluate people’s actions for what they are and how they affect me instead of just labelling them inferior for not being like me; but people who will call themselves kind in a heartbeat are the first people to just tear into someone for not upholding whatever standard they’ve got built up in their heads for humanity. I’m just sick of it, and it’s why I don’t really get involved with people all that much. @Bfahome: I heard rumors in the past that there's a "full" version of Oban's English opening, "Never Say Never".  Are those rumors true and, if so, who would be the ones to have it?  Would it even exist still?

@EiffelSavin: I'm not sure about this. I think the only version I ever heard was the opening version. For your info our US partners felt very strongly about using that song.  I gave my OK because it was pretty catchy, even though the op credits were created to match Yoko Kanno's title song.

@EiffelSavin;: Sul came right after and would certainly have fared better if the question was who's your favorite alien character. Bear in mind that the list of choices here included some of the main characters of the show, like Jordan and Aikka and that one could only give a single answer.

@rhodanum: I'm quite surprised at how high Spirit ranked (higher than Stan, Don and Maya!) and that Jordan ranked higher than Aikka. The latter is especially surprising, given the gigantic number of fanworks (fanart, fanfic) featuring Aikka or Aikka x Eva, compared to Jordan or Jordan x Eva

@EiffelSavin: Aikka ranked first in some territories but overall Jordan came first - among the voters at least. I would be interesting to see if female and male voters voted equally - or predominantly - for one or the other...

@EiffelSavin: Good question indeed but bear in mind their leader crashed on Oban and that there were fierce rivalries between the rest of chiefs. This must have slowed them somehow. Plus there's a new Avatar! 🙂

@EiffelSavin: Here are the programs the team used for the animation: Pencils (well sharpened), large and thin Erasers, and most important: thousands and thousands of sheets of Paper 😉

@SonicMrgame2017: Yeah, but, the animation was done in cels or you guys used some kind of digital ink? PD: Respects!!!! I love handrawn animation

@EiffelSavin: Oban used digital paint and compositing. When we produced the series it was the very last days of painted cells in Japan, where it lasted longer than in other countries. I think the last series that used painted cells was "Sazae-san". 🙂

@EiffelSavin: That was my notes, yes: Maya cut off from her family because of her choice to become a racer with Don, and Don having old parents that died early. Thus no grand parents for Eve to turn 2. But since we never go beyond that in the story, U can make up your own idea on backstory 🙂

@EiffelSavin: Don Wei is not a "big man" but he's determined and has grown quite tough, at least since Maya's death. Do you remember the first time he meets Rick and his biker buddies in the middle of the desert?  He stands up to them pretty well, doesn't he?
